Competition advertising on my site through sig

Okay, on one of my forums I have a owner of a competing forum who decided to register. He's posting regularly with a few links to his competing site in his signature.

Now, there's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't go against my rules or anything. But apparently he's gotten some other members (staff on his site perhaps) to also have his link in their sig - so now I have like five users going around with links to the competing forum.

Moreover, while I think my site might be more active on a day to day basis, the opponents is much larger (like ten times bigger). I suppose I could consider this a complement of sorts. Maybe not.

Anyway, what do you think of this? Anything I can do to make sure my members stay with me?

Thanks,

I wouldn't say theres anything you can do to prevent your members from clicking their sig links, but what you need to do is basically just continue to do what you've been doing. Make sure your site has something unique to offer. Like you said you're more active than the competitor site.

Know what I mean?

If you believe it will harm your forum and you're using vBulletin, I would consider locating the plugin at vBulletin.org which only shows signatures on the first post and no others.

While it will not drop all the links, it will prevent them from showing the link in each post they post to your community.

Quite a few community owners install this for that very reason.

You could ban competition advertising in the rules, but a better way would probably be to just make sure that your forum is a cut above any competition. Like Moelman said, make sure that your site has something unique to offer.

I do not allow many to adveritse their sites on their sigs.
If it is a site that I personally frequent and know the Administrator then I will allow it but no linking.
Also, in the iDEN community it is rarely allowed to advertise one site on another we are all in competition. It is an unspoken rule among many.

Why not do the same back? Ask you mods, if they're going to post on the other site if they'd consider using signatures to your forum.

It is not allowed by many in the community I choose to be involved in.
It is more by word of mouth.
Or word of im's lol.
You earn your member base by how popular your site is.

I know these kind of people: I'm dealing with such a person myself - that's why on my sites, links to other sites must be aproved first.

I suppose if you have a rule that says no competitors links in signatures, but if you require approval with no rule about this it might be seen as favoritism or something. That was just my first thought.

Well, usually I have nothing against links to other websites, but can you blame me for protecting my users against stupid pop-up sites that could infect the computers with malware? No to mention the links to a certain site belonging to a certain webmaster who likes to "borrow" content from my site...
