Thumbs down I can't stand AOL

AOL is a pain in the ass. Users with AOL addresses just never seem to work on our VB forum. And then I wind up answering questions from aol email accounts which they probably never see because it just goes to their spam folder or gets blocked

One solution would be to block AOhell e-mail accounts with a link on the signup form to where AOL users can get an alternative e-mail address. Also a short bit of text explaining why you block the accounts would help. I [touch wood] get few AOL users though on CompuForums - maybe AOL dosen't let them sign up

AOL does seem to be a pain in the rear for eveyone who uses them, or has websites with people who use them

Luckily i don't think i have that many on AOL, and i have just switched from BT, to Sky. So i have never personally crossed path's with them.

Does this happen to forum admins running other non VB boards? Or is AOL a pain only for VB forum owners? I seem to remember not having as many probelms when running phpbb

I have these problems as well. It seems all of my websites got banned from AOL somehow. They never receive account activation e-mails. Then they use the Contact Us form to ask me what's going on, but I can't respond because they won't receive my e-mail! So recently, I banned AOL addresses for new registrations, adding a message on the registration page about why I banned them, and I offered an alternative e-mail service.

I've also banned @aol.com e-mail addresses, simply because some of my members were complaining that they weren't receiving the activation e-mail, newsletters, important announcements, etc. Now, I simply ask that all new members register with an alternative e-mail address.

Same problem here. But instead of a sending me a complaint, this AOL user went on to imdb and lashed out about my forum, saying it was the worst forum, that we were inept and that basically the whole thing was a joke. I tried to explain to him that the reason why he was still not able to post after he had registered was because his AOL account blocked the activation e-mail I had sent him. He said he had turned the spam filter off and that I was making excuses. His post was VERY destructive. And it allowed my competitor to post HIS forum as an alternative to mine! Very sleazy.

The issues I ran into in the past is AOL members not being able to stay logged in. Since modifying the navbar so the "remember me" is checked by default, that issues disappeared for the most part.

I recommend to every AOL user to us an alternate browser to surf the internet. It's not a bad idea to even put that in your site rules/faq.

I also don't verify email addresses because I feel it is a big waste of time. Spam bots have long been able to get past that, and I have no interest in having my members email addresses. The option is there for them to put it in, but I don't care if it is valid or not. If they want to stay up to date with what is going on with my site, they can sign up for my double opt-in newsletter.

I hate everything about AOL from their pathetic internet offers, their pathetic excuse for a Digg clone, and their goal to infest everything on the internet with ads. Even Wikipedia.
