Im going to agree about the language. I'm a moderator at SitePoint and there is a HUGE international community there. One of the rules is that you have to post in English so there is no chance someone doesn't understand what someone has written (as it could be offensive or just flat out bad advice). That is one thing I have adopted at my community too.

It doesn't have to be English, but yes, you as the admin should know what is being said in your forum.

What if he/see is saying "screw this forum, let's all go to this other forum!!!" or "i hate this admin, what a douchebag...look at him, he doesn't have a clue about what's going on!"

Sure, you can plug all posts into one of those online translators, but do you seriously want to do that?
It's always the fresh, new perspectives on things that get blasted. LOL.

My perspective is based on the fellow is already getting the Italian traffic. If you don't mind translating or are bilingual or have a moderator you trust etc etc - then if you have a language-specific forum it might be worth looking into how to capitalize on the traffic. I haven't searched but perhaps there is a translation hack for the forum software such that an Italian specific forum could automagically post both the Italian and English translation ....

Now really I am just playing devil's advocate ... I don't have the time for this sh*** either.

If the Italian poster wants to post on the forum, he should be the one that has to translate it, not the members.

british will become famous soon enough

I can't be too obtuse about that because this member has been contributing A LOT to my forum. So she's doing her part. I thought allowing her to post in both languages was a good compromise.

About my other "overzealous" poster, I don't think she'll grow a brain overnight because she's been warned, or temporarily banned. This member really don't see how neurotic her posts are. Beside, if you ban someone because she is posting too often, what kind of message would that send the other members of your forum? Most of the time they don't know the history. They don't know you've been warning her several times.

How do you guys feel about the "Miserable User" hack?

I think the Miserable Users hack is a terrible idea...If you're going to do that, I don't see why you don't just ban the person.

90% of the time when you ban somebody, your members don't know the full story - I wouldn't ever *not* ban somebody simply because my members don't know why.

I just ban. What's the point in faking it? So they just go away? They'll go away anyway if you ban them.

You could also place the user in Tachy Goes To Coventry.

An admin did that at a forum I mod at, and it was a big mess and a huge mistake. Someone started a thread asking where the user was since they noticed all their posts disappear and it was quite embarrassing. I think they just told the user that asked in a PM that there was some technical problems and it was fixed now.

I agree that Tachy Goes to Coventry is no better than the Miserable Users Hack...Neither of these really help the situation, imo

The Miserable Users hacks can come in handy for special situations, such as a friend IRL not knowing how to behave on a forum and being a public nuisance. Other than that, I prefer real bans.

You can try vB Spell - vBulletin.org Forum

I think that vBH-Advanced Thread Rules - vBulletin.org Forum may help a little.

And finally, there is a Translate a single Post in a Popup w/bablefish - vBulletin.org Forum mod, but I have to agree with that:
