That is definitely not the correct approach to editing posts. It's one thing to joke around, but it's an entirely different thing when it comes to violating a member's privacy (after all, you are essentially "breaking in" to their accounts).

As for me, I do one of three things:

A) Edit the post, and contact the poster privately.
B) Edit the post, and leave a reason as to why I did so.
C) Contact the poster, giving them the opportunity to edit the post themselves.

I almost always go with option C, however, if they choose to ignore my request, I usually go with option B. I will almost never edit a post secretly (ie: avoid contacting the poster, leave no reason for the edit, etc).

Chris

I personally either do one of two things.

If it is a link, I will remove the link and swap it with
>Link Removed By: [RP]Jolteon< ([RP]Jolteon is my nick on my forum...)
If not I will just use the edit reason that comes with vB that is inserted to the bottom of the posts. (If you aren't sure what that looks like, check the bottom of this post, I did a demo edit to show you)

It seems if you make edits or remove posts without telling people, they get upset. I think its always best to leave a note OR send a PM to the user letting them know why you removed it.

This is gonna depend on the member usually.

With newbies I have my mods edit the post, send the member a private message, welcome them to the forum and then briefly explain their post has been edited and what rule violation took place. They also should include a link to the edited post.

With vet members, those who know better but like to push the envelope, I prefer they just get edited with a reason noted (i.e. inappropriate language).

I will never shame or scold a member by allowing a mod to post within their post (other then "link removed, please PM member if link is desired). When I first started we used to do that, give them a little "spanking" so to speak, but it just never seems too professional and I would prefer my staff act with professionalism.

I think adding a shaming comment to a members post (even if it is within the "reason" section of the edit screen) tends to prevent the newbies especially from posting for fear of being publicly humiliated. I won't do that to my members .. even those who tend to deserve it and believe me, I have a few .. lol.

If a post violates a number of the site rules, or is a gross violation of a rule, it will be deleted and the member given a warning via PM.

We do tend to PM members often even though it states in my rules that notification is not required but done purely out of courtesy. However, there are members we simply have stopped sending such messages to because they tend to use the opportunity to argue the rules and I prefer the staff not get into a rules spitting match.

Yeah, I'm kind of like Psyched...It really depends on the member and the violation. It can be anything from an edit with no note to to an edit with a note to a delete.

How is this any different from editing the post from an admin account? Why do you have to access the member's account to do this?

Wow, urm - i've never heard of this being done before - what's the point in even making a forum?

I'll do it silently if its something that i feel shouldn't be in the post, and then not allow the member to re-edit that post, if its spam, i'll move the post(s) to the trash bin - i will then warn the member, if anymore spam continues i will ban them, if i can tell its a bot, i'll just delete the post straight away and an immediate ban.

I wish there was a way to do this with vBulletin.

I always leave a reason if I have to edit a post. Common courtesy really, right?
