| Forum Addict ![]() | member who just won't go away Okay, recently on my Writing forum I had a major copyright incident. One member caused quite a rucus and I banned them by name and ip. However, they still visited the site and viewed things - and their username still showed up as online (meaning they logged in as banned?) So I changed their username. However, they're still showing up on the who's online display. What's up with that? Anyway, is there a way I can ban this member from even viewing my site - from .htaccess or something? I have the ip address of the member in question. I'd like to keep them from my site entirely (I do realize they could use a proxy) and possibly redirect them to a different site/page. Is this possible? If so, how?

| The Webmaster ![]() | Sometimes banned members still show up on the who's online list I've noticed. I'm guessing its them viewing the "you are banned" message - I don't think they can actually access the site. So you should be fine by IP and username banning them. On another note, I think changing their name wouldn't help - I think the cookies would still keep them logged in if thats the way they had them set.

| Forum Addict ![]() | That must be what happened - but it would still show them viewing certain threads in the user profile. I'd rather be safe than sorry. This user was threatening a lawsuit against the site and I want to ensure that they can't view anything - even when not logged in.

| The Webmaster ![]() | You could just delete their account now that I think about it.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | What is your concern here? Keeping them from viewing content? If so, you have already done that...Banning the accounts keeps them from viewing content. Just because you see them in the online list does not mean that they're viewing content. Ban the account and ban the IP - both in vB. You could do a server-side ban if you wanted to also, but that's not going to accomplish much more - any ban can be circumvented using proxies.

The more restrictions you place (ie: banning a huge subnet or blocking all content from all guests), the more likely you are to block out innocent visitors and potential members.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Does it really matters whether or not the member can see your content? Because the way I see it, it shouldn't be big deal if a banned person can view your site, as long as they are not posting.
