Well in England, the IP's are unique, as it is referred to your online identity according to my host.

In India almost all the ISPs assign dynamic ips to their customers, which changes each time you connect. So unless you ban the entire ip range, that spammer would still be able to access the forum.

Also there are always proxy servers for those who are determined to spam!

And the kicker is those who are spamming as a "living" will use proxy servers anyways so banning IP's won't do anything except hurt legitimate users.

I dont think you will ever stop spammers.

I look at new members once a day, scan Google with their email address for any member names that look dodgy (the word "phone" in the username), then if a spammer, ban their IP and email address and delete their account.

Takes time but its the only way I know

Why do you go through all of that trouble, deleting "spammers" if they haven't posted? That just seems like a lot of work to find accounts that haven't even done anything abusive.

I just ban spammers if and when they show themselves.

I do that as well. I leave spam memberships alone (delete their homepage if it's nasty) but leave them as members as 99% of them don't post anything and it just looks like your forum is active.

I don't keep them for numbers (inactive, 0 post members are not good)...I just don't go out of my way to get rid of them if they're doing no harm.

I actually haven't had a bot sign up in over 4 months after doing my mod.

I have also noticed one thing lately, if you delete a spammer id, after a while it registers again. So best bet it seems is in banning them instead of removing them altogether.
