I wouldnt allow animated because they're just too "flashy" - AF leans more towards the professional side than the average forum and bright, multi-colored flashing avatars could bring that down.

Then you have to worry about animated avatars that flash up something that is against your guidelines. Who knows, maybe an avatar is animated...but what it does is sit on one image for 5 seconds and then flashes "F*** YOU!!" for one second...are you going to catch those every time? Sure, I doubt it would be a problem very often...I'm just not a huge fan of animated avatars/signature

That's the same reason why I don't allow animated avatars.

I risk allowing animated avatars, no issues yet. If their avatar breaks the guidelines then I'll just remove it.

At LF, we don't allow movie-animation style avatars because we are thinking of our minority users who are still on dial up (and 800x600). The page load for them would take ages if animated avs were strewn across the board.

I'm sure you might think that those users could just turn off avatars and/or signatures, but like Ryan said, that subtracts from the personality of the post.

I have no problems with members having avatars and signatures, as long as they follow forum rules for sizes and content.

What about allowing images in signatures? My forums I don't, what about everyone else?

Sorry but honestly I don't like them. Images/banners/etc.

It just makes the overall "flow" of the forum not flow. They are too distracting; I would rather see regular text signatures. I don’t know maybe it’s just me.

That's one reason I don't allow them. It gets pretty distracting when you have huge images in the signatures.

I like having sig pics, I allow them and I use them in all or most of the forums I'm a member of. I think it's a kind of expanded avatar, something that shows what the member likes, etc. And then I always link my sig pics to my forum, even if the pic isn't promoting my forum

I don't mind animated avatars either, I allow them as long as they don't go above 40kb.

One problem I have with signatures that have images in them (specifically banner size images) is that to me all the person is doing is getting away from having to pay for advertising space and then just posting all the time so their banner gets seen. On my site, if you want your banner to appear, there is advertising spots for that.
