I had a hard copy of all my files, and just grabbed the database every day or so. It was a happy community so there was no real malice towards it, so no hacking attempts were made.

well no hacking attempt so far but you should be aware it will come one day.

At least once a week you should make a full site backup. Database backups from phpmyadmin maybe every 2 days to every 12 hours. Backups from the forum script itself tend to really suck and doesn't really help much.
