How often should backup my site?

What is the proper way to backup a forum (vbulletin) and how often?

It really depends on how large the site is, or how fresh the content is.

I would say a small forum, once a week.
a medium forum, every few days.
a large forum, every day
a super forum, every 12 hours.

Do I need to backup everything? or just the mysql database?

I would just worry about the mysql db, but some would say backup everything.

It's a preference.

I have local copies of everything. I'd just rather play it safe. Like last night I dreamed someone had hacked on of my sites. I backed everything up first thing this morning. :o

I'm just anal like that, though. I try to make sure I'm in control of my site's destiny.

Export the database to a file with e.g. phpMyadmin.
Download all the files from your ftp to you computer.
That's how I always do it
