Proving videos are yours?

I think this is the correct forum to post this in. It is a legal isssue I think.

My site was recently suspended because the TOS staff mistook my videos to be someone elses and therefore stolen... The videos are mine and I recorded them with my own camera. The only way I could prove they were mine is by the credits I put in the end when I edited it in movie maker. Is there some other way that I can prove that the videos are mine and prevent this from happening again?

You may be able to use software to generate a small watermark on every frame... I've seen it done.

Hmm ok thanks, I will look into that one.

Unfortunatly even though my name is in the credits of my videos my host still dont belive me... I have now ended up sending them the movie maker project to prove its mine.

At the end, you can record yourself saying what site you have uploaded this video to and your username

I think that host has a bad taste in their mouth from a previous engagement with the law. If they don't offer any verification process, then how can they expect legitimate videos at all? I agree with GetShorty. Get another host, and cite the reason in the exit email. (that is, if they care to know why you are leaving)

Try not to get charged for leaving. I mean, if you have paid in advance, then get your money back.

Sorry about the self promotion, but this is what I have done in my videos which proves that I own them. I introduce my website, then I put a watermark in the corner.

Yours might not work like that, but it is always good to introduce your site or write something on your body that says it is your site

Show them the original project video in the editing format. In adobe Premeire Pro 1.5 i'm pretty sure it is .proj or something close to that. Also, put a small watermark in the corner of all your captured clips. That is what bigger companies do so that no one can "steal" their footage and they can claim that it's their own.

Not quite as leak proof as you think - there are lots of softwares out there that will import a video! - All that they have to do is save it as a new project - tweak it slightly etc.

The RIGHT way to go about a legal copyright imho is that you would make a Hard copy of your project and send it to yourself by registered mail - That way you have an independant arbitration point to argue if it came to any lind of legal action - the 'Date' being the obvious importance here

thats a really good idea... I don't see how mailing it to yourself would work at all though. Couldnt you still tweak someones videos, make a hard copy, then send it via registered mail?

I do get your point though, we do need better DRM in this world. p2p users have kind of ruined it for the rest of us that don't steal every piece of media we see.
