How many days of backups do you keep?

I'm currently backing up my forums nightly and retaining the three most recent backups. I'm considering changing to this 15 or even 30 days, since space is not an issue.

What is your backup schedule and retention plan?

My backups are made every 6 hours (Cron job), and the last 3 are available.

The only problem is, there is not much of a gap to detect errors in backups, been every 6 hours, your backups can quickly fill with errors.

I wouldn't like that at all... What if you are unable to get to your site for a day or two, then there is a problem? You've only got backups from the current day.

Hmm, theres something i hadn't considered, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Now i need to consider either changing the amount of available backups, or increasing the time between each...

Does your forum receive enough posts to warrant backups every six hours? There's certainly nothing wrong with it, so long as you figure out how many days of backups you want to keep, then multiply that by four...

I think it may be best either increasing the time to 18 or 24 hours, or increasing the amount kept up to 6.

I think I'm going to keep 15 days worth of backups, two backups per day...

Unfortunatly i don't have the space for so many backups (Well not on the server my forum is on, i do have a virtually unused server account on a different server, but thats for my latest project, and the offer to start up forums)
