I get spammer sign-ups daily, but only 1 or 2 a month get through to actually posting something.

I get several spammers every day on each of my forums. There's not much you can do except for delete them as you see them unfortunately. :-(

Believe me, I've tried for years..

Hi folks. If you're running vBulletin and have got daily problems fighting with spambots, take a look at how a secure anti-bot registration should be set up: http://forum.sotzone.ru/register.php (that's my forum, adjust your language to English to see all the details).

Here are the exact measures used to combat the bots here:

1. Enhanced Captcha Image Verification plugin (displays 4 random images upon entering registration) - http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=132482

2. NoSpam! plugin (asks a simple randomized question a user should answer during registration) - http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=124828

3. vB 3.6 built-in Captcha with the following settings: a random True Type font with a random size, color & shapes.

4. An optional custom profile field with the following Regular Expression: ^([A-Z ]|[a-z ])+$
This allows the input of capital & small letters along with spaces, nevertheless blocks all of the special characters. That's done because the advertisement bots are usually entering the stuff like "http://www.their-domain.com" into the custom profile fields.

5. Prevent Spam Posts plugin - http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=131568
This will allow you to block certain word combinations written by the recently registered users with a small number of posts. The exact two wordings to be blocked here are: "http://" and "www." (plus the same with capitals). After that all messages from recently registered users (with like 5 posts or less) having these two expressions will be sent to a moderation queue before appearing on the board.

6. You may also have noticed that "Reset Fields" & "Complete Registration" buttons are not in the usual order on my forum, but since this includes the editing of the master template to make it appear on all styles, I'm certain that the first 5 options will be more than enough to prevent the spam on your forum If you will carefully look at all of the plugins mentioned above and will add them to your forum, the number of bots auto-registering here in order to spam it will reduce to zero.

Hope this helps,
Dmitri.

Excellent post, Dmitri!

We've actually had an increasingly large problem w/ spam here at AF lately and I've been keeping an eye on various mods at vbulletin.org...The one that you mentioned second (NoSpam!) seems to be the one that works best. I've installed that one here now, so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for your list of mods...good tools for vB users.

I tend to get Viagra spammers every 3-4 weeks. They also tend to register under similar usernames; one week, it may be "dfgss345", while it may be "dgffs344" the week after.

Hello, I have just finished and posted a bandwith bandit tutorial on my site. You are welcome to check it out. I think it covers a lot of problems posted here. Some of the options you have are pretty simple, especially the bots if you are running Apache. The tutorial is about bandwidth theft but covers a lot of spammer issues too. Please feel free to check it out, its free!
