The server I was hosted on was being attacked by Isrealies spreading some message, and my site was one of them to be defaced. Luckily they only replaced index.php, but they then deleted the entire public_html directory.

However, my server owner notified me of this before my site was attacked.

My forums haven't been hacked yet. I have too few visitors for that, lol.
My guestbook was defaced once: all messages replaced with "hacked by some-sucker". A few days before that someone got to my site through "html enabled" keywords. Since then I always disable html in everything.

I have had a few the host right now is on the ball.

My worst was when i went to Germany to work for 3 weeks and had no internet connection i came back to 1 page Your Owned by Piloz i think it was. I had to start from scratch. But what did i learn

I wouldnt make this assumption...I've seen forums with only 20 active members get hacked before - not by somebody part of the forums or somebody who knew about the forums...but somebody who found an exploit in a certain version of software and went around googling random forums and hacking them for fun. A lot of people do that...hack websites they've never even visited just because they can.

I once had a forum with unupdated phpbb and some kid hacked it and made tons of posts with pictures of penises in them.

I actually remove the version number from my forum's footer. I retain the copyright and all that, but remove the version.
Just giving those looking for phpBB version with known exploits a harder time
