Why do people hack forums?

Our forum is currently offline being fixed after being hacked?

They somehow got into our IPB forum and made a real mess of everything - our tech guys and hosting company are having to sort it out.

Yes, its annoying But my question is this : why do people do this? What do they 'get' from it - or is it just the satisfaction of screwing with people's enjoyment?

I don't get it

Its probably lack of maturity i don't really know why people do it but maybe they are jealous of your website or are competing with you and they want to get rid of you so this is how they do it, which is sad

for what they get most likely its satisfaction, a feeling of power i guess that they can hack such and such website and make then selves more hatted by website owners that they have hacked.

It's a combination of immaturity and too much time. For the most part, hackers have no reason for hacking a website; they just get a kick out of it.

Often, they don't even care about what your website is - they just have fun doing it and ruining someone else's day. If they see an exploit on a security site, some might go out, find the forums software it applies to, and hack a few for fun...

Usually they're just bored.

They do it for the attention. For the same reason people graffiti, and vandalise buildings.

It's the only way they can beat their competition sometimes. Rather then just make a better forum, destroying the opposition seems to work for these people

I had my site hacked and it was not a good thing.
I had a Teknical (spells like that) find the guilty party.
They tend to leave their imprints.
I think it is sad that other's need to do this to make themselves feel important. It was a personal attack geared towards me.
We went public with it and have since distanced ourselves from many.
I feel that they should be shot lol but that is only my opinion.

My old website was hacked once. The script wasn't a secure one for my newsposting. It was some turkish hacker.

People do this because they like to see others suffer.

Exactly, and after they take care of your website, they'll find another one. I've actually seen people reason with them, and it sometimes proves to be effective. Then again, I've seen people attempt to reason with them, and in the end, their website ends up being hacked further.
