Viewing IP's

I don't think this has been posted but if it has sry ;(

Defult on Phpbb it lets mods View Ips... if your forum allows mods to view IP's do you allow it... i mean what can keep them from using that info for some other reasonn, eh ?

I disabled it on 4TeensOnly.com b/c all my mods a teens...so there for thay have no reason to see the IP's

and another question...y would mods need to view IP's in the first place

For me, if you trust someone enough to be a mod, then viewing IP's shouldn't hurt. I allow it for the simple reason of if someone continues to register and spam the forums, mods can tell if they are coming from the same IP. Then that IP can be banned as well as their usernames.

We don't allow it here at AF, because there really is no reason for mods to see or use IP's...if any problems arise and an IP needs to be detected, they can forward them to an admin. This rarely happens, in fact, we've only had 1 IP ban in 4 months here at AF...so it's obviously not something that is an every day occurence.

In my personal option, IP addresses intheory are a good way of banning people. However in pratice it doesnt work very well.

if i reboot my ADSL router, i will get a different IP address, not on the same Class C block and sometimes, on a different Class B block. Because ISP's use DHCP now to allocated IP addresses, its very difficult to do effective IP address blocking.

Now IP address blocking for autosubmissions oftern works well as people tend to use webservers for that, which very rarely change there IP addresses (some companys offer system where you can change your IP address oftern, but most dont).

So, in theory, banning a IP address can work well, but in pratice, they are oftern useless.

I dont see any reason for a moderator to need an IP address, however if it can help them track abuse, then they might as well have access to it.

Really with an IP address there is very little they can do. People say they can shut down machines just using an IP address, but the chances are very low, as most operating systems include a firewall now, then a lot of users install a second firewall. If they are using a ADSL line, most routers have port forwarding disabled, and most ISPs do basic filtering on common exploits.

Personally, all i really find a IP address useful for is reporting abuse, as with the exact time, and ip address it can be traced to someone if authorities need to.

In the end, only admins / owners NEED IP addresses, but they can be helpful to moderators.
