Please have your friends send us a security report by filling in all the relevant info at http://www.simplemachines.org/about/security.php. The more information they can provide, the more likely it is that we can help them find out how they got hacked.

Here are my top three tips for ensuring you don't get hacked:
    1) BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP - You should be doing this anyway. You don't know what may hit your site - you should always take daily backups of your site and every week copy them to another hard drive. My suggestion is buy a flash drive [they are cheap nowadays] and use it to back up your site.
    2) Keep up to date. Make sure you always apply the latest security patches, especially if you're running on something that's always being hacked like phpBB [2] and SMF [great script, but 2 of my clients have had their installs hacked].
    3) Make sure your host has the latest patches. They shouldn't just be protecting themselves, but also their clients - if someone can get root access through an insecure program on the server, or an unsecured PHP setup, then it is literally two simple commands to kill a Linux box and lose all data.

PC101 - Free Tech Help for Windows XP, Vista, 2000, 98 and more!

So, I think they just hacked the index/home page.

How do fix it and... more importantly... how do I prevent them from doing it again?

    Thanks

If your having to ask if you were hacked... then id say your probably were

Problems like this are usually to do with pre-coded, off the shelf so to speak, software like bulliten boards, blogs and such things. With them being available to anybody - and everybody - vulnerabilities are sometimes quite quickly zoned in on and then exploited around the net.

Check to make sure anything you have installed is completely up to date, and contact your Host who will more than likely be very willing and ready to help you in such situations

EDIT (Just realised that this thread was old... and everything ive said was kinda already covered -- sorry! )

If only this was true. There are some hosts who really couldn't care. Especially if you're on the basic plan and maxing out the resources that they advertised to lure you in, in the first place - the host I'm using now have been very helpful.
