Okay, thanks for your advice guys. I tried a local server in the past and it just gave me a headache. I've password protected the directory and used .htaccess too. Will also look into a robots text file.

If you're using .htpasswd and a prompt for login appears when you visit the page, then robots probably won't able to even get into the robots.txt file. I'm pretty sure that Apache's authentication system hasn't been cracked yet [certainly not in the newest versions]. The main thing you'll want to do is use a secure password [i.e t3@sti%2'-dIr£cT@r.]. To be honest though, a hacker probably won't go to those lengths to get into your testing directory - instead they must be going in via another route on your host's server and most are secured against this, but any file chmodded 777 can potentially be accessed by all other users on your host.

The robots.txt will be in the root and the root isn't password protected so the robots will still be able to access the robots.txt file.
