Ensuring my test board won't be hacked

I have a test board set up for Silver Firefly Studios and I've password protected it via .htaccess and .htpasswd but will that be enough to stop people from hacking into my test directory? I've turned off registrations and turned the board off etc. Is there anything else I should do to make sure my test board won't be hacked?

Why are you so concerned about this?

.htaccess protection alone is sufficient to keep people out....Can it still be hacked? Sure it can, the finest hackers in the world can do just about whatever they want...but I don't see why anybody would be so inclined to hack your test forums, and I don't know why you would be so concerned if they do

Well, for starters, the styles I'm working on are stored there. Even though I backup, it's a hassle to have to restore if it gets hacked.

Hackers are petty minded IMO, I'm guessing there are some out there who will hack just for the hell of it.

Just disabling registrations alone would be enough, defientely .htaccess protection.

Even putting it in a strange named directory such as www.yourdomain.com/fh3fdshnf should be ok.

They also wouldn't gain anything from hacking it, no money and no publicity.

If you're concerned about people getting your stuff - develop your styles on a local server. Download XAMPP or WAMPServer and it will set up an Apache/PHP/MySQL server for you

Just place your test forums in an undisclosed sub-domain like: mysite.com/testforumsx etc. and name your forum somthing other than forum.

Who's going to find it? - if you place a robots text file in your root directory telling the googlebots to get lost.

I would think that you're safe with .htaccess protection. They'd have to beat that kind of protection, and then find the security hole to actually hack the board. I don't know if they have that long of an attention span.

Most forum hackers don't hack for hell of it, what do they gain unless they are paid or something. You don't have anything to worry about.

In quite alot of cases, it would be your server which would be compromised - in this case you probably do not have to worry as i'm assuming that you have shared hosting i.e. your web host will manage the security of the server (note: this does not prevent attacks on outdated forum software).
