paying for a backup ?

ok, this is something old that has happen to me... but i still wanna know if any other person had to do this

about 4 months ago i was installing chat, and i messed up so i went into the db to delete all the tables that went with chat, when i was doing it i clicked my user table and did not know it... so i droped the user table... and no good back up (don't ask me how)

I went to lunarpages (my host) and thay said to get that 1 table it would be 75 dollars ! (thay said it would be 75 dollars for 1 file or table or the whole site)

Does your host charge you for any backups if you need it ? or do thay make you pay like lunarpages does ?

Chris
(i did not pay for it... i just went to a reallly old backup, lost aout 20 users.)

Agreed, no host should charge for routine backups - especially $75...sounds like they are trying to con you out of some money

I disagree. A company has the right to make their rules on how they choose to operate. You as a customer are responsible for researching these aspects and making your choice on provider on how you feel about their rules. That being said I remember back in the day that it was 100% your responsibility to make backups. If you didn't and something was done on your part to lose the data, whether it be from hacking or negligence you were responsible for having the data. In a lot of cases they wouldn't even do the restore for you from their backups. Even if you paid them. So if in their rules, or terms of service, they state they charge a backup restore fee for the count of negligence then that is your responsibility to know about it.

He's not talking about having them restore the backup...he just wants the backup itself.

Any host who charges you $75 to provide a backup is ripping you off. It is obvious that they already have the backup, so I would consider anything over $5 to be a ripoff...and I wouldn't even pay $5 for one. If they're saying the $75 is to actually restore the backup, tell them that's not what you need - you just need the backup itself.

For $75, they probably don't even have the backup, but don't want it admit it. They just threw out a really high price hoping you wouldn't go with it.

If you pay attention, then why are you in this situation? (where you are having to ask your host for a backup?)
