Creative Bans

Let's hear some interesting ban stories if you've got some...additionally any interesting methods you've used to keep people out of your forums. Does anybody use some sort of Miserable Users hack or "Tachy Goes Coventry"?

Sometimes there are the members who you just hate or are absolutely annoying so you don't feel too bad by making their life miserable....there are the people who you try to ban but just wont leave your forums alone. Larry, I believe has either done this before or has considered it - but he has talked about "banning" a member so that every time they visit your forums they get a 404 error, as if the forums actually don't exist...not that they are down.

Personally, I really don't have much of interest ....I'm boring, just the good ole username, email, and IP bans...Maybe it's just because I'm too good of a guy to do anything mean to people.

No, that can't be it...If you ever get on my bad side, you'll understand that

Interesting ban stories? Creative ways of banning members? Do tell

Naughty Usergroup... I let them watch the other members having fun, making them wish they were involved on it, etc.... Then every week if I had about 5+ banned members still browsing... I would through out a competition or promotional making them wish they wouldn't of gotten banned... When its time for them to be unbanned, they apologize and have never caused trouble again.

Well, I have done strategic banning. I take away certain rights or privleges(sp?). For instance, No avatar rights for first infraction lasting 2 days, etc.

we HAD a shoutbox at one time and we had a situation where this member who was a good, paying member of our forum always thought people were picking on him (staff) when really everyone was just playing around cracking jokes, including him, he dished it out like everyone else. well all of a sudden this guy marks his text red, big, and bold and totally flames one of our mods in the box [IE f*** you, your a b****, F*** LNL, etc.] for which he got banned for.

and we do have the miserable hack installed, but we really dont have to use it a whole lot.

So, Winston, the naughty usergroup sounds interesting. How is it set up? Is it a hack? Or just a restricted usergroup that you manually assign them to, or what? Details, please.

These are good to read for a newbie like me. Fortunatley nothing has come up for me, but no harm in being locked and loaded.

Anyone else?

It's a restricted usergroup set as a banned member option which can't do anything but view the forums and post replies... Can't make threads, send PM's or use avs and sigs... This is if their action wasn't bad enough to deserve a FULL ban.

The forum I admin on also uses something similar to this.

When mods warn a user using the warning mod (not modcp), it places them in a usergroup called SP4MM3R for the duration of the "ban".

Real banning is still done via the CP of course.
