I have seen many good forums destroyed because of hacking. The main reason hackers can gain access to your forums important admin control panel is that your password is too weak. As im sure you've heard before, to protect your password, it needs to be:

1. 10-20 letters and numbers long
2. Contain both letters and numbers
3. Not be written down anywhere.

But this poses problems, im certain im not the only one that finds it hard to remember a big complicated password easily. So, i came up with a way to secure your password and give your memory an easier time.

Im sure everyone on this forum has a phone number, im not sure how it works in the U.S but take away my U.K area code and im left with a 7 digit non-alphanumeric number which is easy to remember. 2106653.

Now i need a word of between 6 and 8 letters, for example, i will use the word example.

So, i have my phone number 2106653 and my word example and now i just have to combine them like so:

e2x1a0m6p6l5e3

As you can see i have used the letter or digit from each one alternatively and im left with a very secure password and hopefully its slightly easier to remember than a random secure password.

Not a bad idea if you just want to be able to recall your password from time to time...but it isnt exactly something you can sit down and recall immediately...it's almost like unscrambling a word, haha....

I use alpha-numeric passwords, but what I do is just find a password that kinda flows off of my tongue...that way, even though it has no significance, it has a ring to it

Interesting thought though...definitely a good way to create a long, memorable password

On other big suggestion I would make is for everyone to mod their forums such that the admin panel actually takes 2 passwords to get in to it. It is much more secure.

Larry, do you mean you have to login twice, like phpbb, or to have a different password for the admin then to logon the admin's username

I generally use Cadence's way of having a password.

I make up a word that has no meaning whatsoever and has no link to me at all.

My admin panel has 2 password boxes. One is my normal password for the forum. The other is a password that can only be reset once u login to the admin panel or by another admin. I did this mod after a hole was found in my forum that allowed a person to reset anyone's password. This way if there is such a hole again they will still not be able to get to my admin panel. Below is a screenshot.

Note the red text at the top...it has been reported broken...and I havent tested it yet. The mod LarryB was talking about is for IPB 2.0.x, not IPB 2.1.x
