Pointless to get phpBB2?
Is it pointless now to get PhpBB2 and code a few of 'unique' mods? Should i wait for PhpBB3 or will the mods that i make will start work in PhpBB3? (This includes also coding a skin for phpbb2, but will we be able to convert that skin from phpbb2 to phpbb3?)

I don't think it would be pointless to code a few mods and a skin for phpbb2, after all the migration from phpbb2 to phpbb3 is going to be slow. I know I wouldn't want to convert my forum for at least 5-6 months, since the number of mods available and updated would be quite less.

Yeah, I agree - it's going to be a very slow transition from 2 to 3, simply because the MODS that people need updating. Some boards might stay on phpBB2 from a couple of months to even years

The mods and styles will have to be written over for phpBB3. This has been discussed over at phpbb.com, and because of that I will end up being one of the people waiting a long time before I upgrade.
