Restoring a single thread

Is this possible? I asked on vb.com and the reply I received was that he "didn't know of any easy way."

Anyone have suggestions? I lost a thread with several thousand posts and would like it back if possible.

Thanks,

It was deleted by a new moderator, unfortunately.

I have a backup that's a week or two older. I'd loose some posts in the thread, but if I could somehow restore it I would save most.

It would be hard, but a good SQL ninja most likely could fix it for you.

Yeah, it's doable. Not the easiest thing to do but anyone who knows SQL and vBulletin would be able to. I would also recommend not giving moderators access to physically remove.

I swear I saw I hack on vBorg about just this. Restoring old threads. Forgive me, but I can't be bothered to actually find it for you, but I do remember it was in 3.6 modifications.

I tried to do the same on my localhost. Result : Successful.

Table 1 : post
(this is the original vbulletin table that holds the posts' data)

Table 2 : post1
(I created this table from an older backup which contained those deleted posts too)

Now you need to know the THREADID of the thread that you want to restore.
In my case the THREADID was 2.

To copy the deleted posts of thread 2 from post1 table to the post table,
i ran this query :

Code:
INSERT INTO post(
postid, threadid, parentid, username, userid,
title, dateline,pagetext, allowsmilie, showsignature,
ipaddress, iconid, visible, attach, infraction,
reportthreadid)
SELECT
postid, threadid, parentid, username, userid,
title, dateline, pagetext, allowsmilie, showsignature,
ipaddress, iconid, visible, attach, infraction,
reportthreadid
FROM post1
WHERE threadid = 2 AND parentid <> 0;
Okay. This will copy the posts' data back to the original vB post table.
Now we need to copy the thread information.

Table 1 : thread
(original vbulletin table that holds the threads' information)

Table 2 : thread1
(Created this table too from the same older backup which contained that deleted thread/posts)

And then ran this query :

Code:
INSERT INTO thread(
threadid, title, firstpostid, lastpostid, lastpost,
forumid, pollid, open, replycount, hiddencount,
deletedcount, postusername, postuserid, lastposter,
dateline, views, iconid, notes, visible,
sticky, votenum, votetotal, attach, similar)
SELECT
threadid, title, firstpostid, lastpostid, lastpost,
forumid, pollid, open, replycount, hiddencount,
deletedcount, postusername, postuserid, lastposter,
dateline, views, iconid, notes, visible,
sticky, votenum, votetotal, attach, similar
FROM thread1
WHERE threadid = 2;
This will copy that deleted thread's information from the table thread1 to the vb's thread table.

You're done.
Now go to your AdminCP's maintenance section and rebuild all your counters.

Quote:
WARNING :

Do NOT even attempt to do this on your LIVE board. Take all your backups, and then do this in your local web server. And if successful, export the 2 necessary tables (post & thread) back to your live environment. I take no responsibility if anything goes wrong if you try this directly on your live board.
Good luck.

I'd second this for future reference, instead of actually deleting content on my boards it is always moved t a hidden "Bin" only visible to staff.

Does your host provide nightly backups? You could probably get a more recent version from them if you asked nicely?
