vB Transfer Policies

This thread is what made me start this topic...Apparently Jelsoft has a new policy on leased license transfers now - they don't allow it.

David made an interesting comment about how Jelsoft must lose a lot of money by allowing these transfers, and I think he's right...Just imagine how many licenses would be sold if people couldn't pass them around...If when you bought a license, you were stuck with it...but then again, if they didnt allow for transfers, people would probably be more hesitant about buying them in the first place knowing that they couldn't resell it.

So, do you think it was a good move by Jelsoft to stop leased license transfers? It is obviously not from the user's perspective, but do you agree with their decision to do this?

I don't know my stance on it yet, that's why I'd love to hear some other opinions to get a better feel for what is going on ...I will say that I don't think it leaves a very good impression on the consumers. If IPS decides to keep their policy, it will raise them a step above Jelsoft in this situation.

Well I was directly affected by this considering I paid for a leased license from someone that has one, got nothing, and I'm still waiting for the refund since they decided to spend the money I sent them.

I think it was a great business move on their part and it will probably make their owned licenses sell better. Think about it, less work for them, less support, and they can still sell a license to the other person, makes buying an owned license more attractive to a potential buyer (since you can transfer it), makes perfect business sense.

I think they were right in changing their business model, but I don't agree with the way they implemented it. They should have grandfathered in every leased license that was purchased before that rule. They only had to support the user for a year, when the license expired if they wanted to renew, they'd just have to agree to the new no transfer rule.

If you think about it VBulletin is making out like a bandit with the new deal. They charge the $80 for the leased license, the person that buys it doesn't want it anymore so they don't use it and now VBulletin doesn't need to give any support.

I own a couple of owned licenses and I've never bought anything from VBulletin directly (actually once I renewed my member area). There is a very large aftermarket for there script and it probalby was hurting their business a lot.

When was this made a rule? This is the first time I read about this posted anywhere. It affected me but I thought there was another reason behind it, I actually didn't really pay attention to the seller's response I thought there was a different problem.

And this happened on March 14, 2006.

This is a copy of the email VBulletin sent him:

Quote:
I'm sorry but your leased license is not eligible for transfer. As per the license agreement only active owned licenses are eligible for transfer. You can read the license agreement here:

I understand the circumstances on what brings Jelsoft to the point not to allow transfers of leased licenses. However, being that in terms could bring in less support and worries, could have an effect on outsiders.

I heard that they would possibly do this policy, but wasnt sure and so i purchased a leased, knowing that I wouldnt do too much afterwards, i figured i sell it. Sent an email to Jelsoft prior to the policy which granted me to do this last wish of transfering. Lucky me huh? Well, in regards of it, i'm happy that i could resell it to someone that will get moneys worth out it. And yes, Jelsoft could possibly lose money on this by other reselling it, but in retrospect, I can that maybe getting it a lower price may encourage people to buy another one, yet, the price may belittle them for a min, but if they want it, they will buy.

So, I believe its a good step for Jelsoft to have this policy in effect to draw in a bigger crowd to maybe purchasing a leased for a short term and owned for long term and see how it goes from there. Afterall, about 85% likes vBulletin which is nice software. The only speckle of worries me is the piratism.

Regards.
