Installing GD for linux servers

This article is a collection of steps and instructions written by Chris Schreiber for vBulletin.com support forum's manual with the additional of steps on compiling PHP with zlib and GD support if you don't already have them. This part is how to install GD when GD is not available on your linux server.

N.B.
1. You need root telnet access to your dedicated server
2. I myself only theoretically know the steps but haven't had any practise in trying this out. (Anyone who has a spare web server lying around for me to practise with just let me know )

What is GD?
GD is a programming API which allows for creating and modifying images on the fly. It's not required by vB... however more and more scripts do require it.

Installation is pretty easy:

gd is a graphics library. It allows your code to quickly draw images complete with lines, arcs, text, multiple colors, cut and paste from other images, and flood fills, and write out the result as a PNG or JPEG file. This is particularly useful in World Wide Web applications, where PNG and JPEG are two of the formats accepted for inline images by most browsers.

You can get more information and download gd at http://www.boutell.com/gd/

Downloading
First, we need to download the latest versions of gd from
http://www.boutell.com/gd/http/gd-1.8.4.tar.gz and place it in the /usr/local/src directory on your server.
From the shell prompt:
Quote:
# cd /usr/local/src

# tar xfz gd-1.8.4.tar.gz

# cd gd-1.8.4

# ./configure –-prefix=/usr/local/gd

# make

# make install
