Radio takes alot of bandwidth...
I do it, and i use professional software that cost $200, so it isnt cheap.

Chances are, if you attempt to host a radio on your home connection, your ISP will suspend your service. In the event that they actually allow this, the transfer and bit-rate would be horrible and the overall quality for listeners would be awful.

The reason for such is because high-bandwidth usage is easily tagged. I know of plenty that have actually been suspended over the very same thing as well as attempting to host a server on their connection.

For quality purposes, you need bandwidth from a provider that deals primarily in bandwidth allotments. A dedicated server would come to mind specifically.

you can also get yourself in major trouble if you dont pay the fees to all the lil agencies that regulate internet radio.

there is software out there available for alot less then said. Its just not comparable with function. If you want to run a station, your best bet is to search for a host such as shoutcast, and use the proper lic. agencies, like loudcity.. or you can get into trouble.

I guess you could run a small ShoutCast server, just make sure you have all the licenses for music you play

You are allowed to play "open source music", licenced under Creative Commons, without a licence or royalty fees. While it may be new to almost all of your listeners, if you want to have a little music in your streams, it's worth a try. One site where you can find Creative Commons music is http://www.opsound.org/. More can be found by doing a quick Google.

Generally, you will have an easier time obtaining permission from those not signed to a label, however, if you're looking to play major record label based music, you could easily find yourself in the middle of a lawsuit.

While you may have purchased a CD or the song through iTunes, that will not hold up and allow you to play the music across your station. You'd need to contact the labels directly in regards to obtaining the proper licenses for replay.

$20-$50/month for your DSL/Cable Modem connection will be nothing compared to a lawsuit in the end . Then you not only risk court and legal fees, but termination of your account with your provider as they will have to comply and shut services down otherwise they too could face a lawsuit for allowing open-air play through their services.

ShoutCast and such services are great, however, you'll still need to find a way to obtain the paperwork/licenses for replay on air.
