What URL Could Be Worth $12 Million?

Sex.com, naturally. In a deal straight out of the late '90s, this ultimate domain name just sold for $12 million in cash and stock. According to this USA Today article, "the sale ranks as one of the most expensive Web domain name transfers ever and outpaces the $7.5 million paid for business.com in 1999 at the peak of the dotcom boom."

Interestingly, the seller of sex.com is also the founder of Match.com. The site currently leads to adult entertainment sites via banner ads; the new owners are going to use the domain to create their own adult entertainment "desination." Just goes to show you that prime URLs can still bring in the mega bucks.

You would be surprised...the domain business is a crazy industry. That domain has a TON of potential. I cant even imagine how many hits it gets without even having any content. They will get their money's worth.

it would take so much advertising to get the hits it would get without any advertising, and the adult entertainment industry is big so it wont take them long to make there money back and if not they could proberly sell it in a few years for twice as muchas what they paid

It won't take as long as you think. It's not as if the domain was just created, it has already been around for a very long time...and look at the traffic it is already receiving http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=www.sex.com

Anybody who has and is willing to spend $12 million on a domain will know exactly what to do with it

You got that right, you don't just buy a domain like that just to buy it, if i was 18 and 11,999,956 dollars richer it would be mine...Oops forgot the tax..

The buyer definitely knows what they are doing. You don’t spend 12 million on something and not know what you doing.

Kind of makes you wish you snagged coke.com a decade ago...

Look at the traffic spike lol... after people found out about the sale they ran over to gawk at it.
