Question How to best hire a full time designer?

I am looking to hire a full time web designer (coding knowledge a big plus). I have one I work with now that does great work, but due to his other clients it can be slow work at times. I would like to bring on a salaried designer and just don't know the best way to go about finding the right fit. I am nervous because I need to be able to trust this person and need them to be a long term fit, not a fly by night. Any thoughts you guys have would be VERY helpful!

look for someone who does work for a bunch of people and say "Hi, i see you doing a lot of work for a lot of people, would you consider just working for 1 person if the workload and income for you remained the same? then you wouldn't have to keep track of 4-5 clients jobs all at one time."

they just might take you up on it.

If I were in your position Lee, what I would probably do first is look around for a few designers who's work I really like and approach them with an offer like Caddy suggested.

If you can't find anyone who really sticks out to you, or you are turned down by those you approach, I would post a thread in webmaster forums describing what you are looking for and asking for applications of sorts. But you need to be very clear in what you are looking for so that only those that can truly dedicate enough time to you will show interest. Make sure all the important points are covered such as whether it is full or part time and the workload involved.

I would think that it would be great if you could find someone here at AF or EF that you already know and know you can trust. If you are liking the look of someone you're not familiar with, I'd get them on the phone to talk to them because its much easier to tell whether someone is being sincere when you are actually talking to them.

Hope this has helped. Good luck!

I'm like Moelman...I'd first try to find somebody you know and trust - but, if you don't have anybody in mind...Then you've gotta look elsewhere.

The first 3 places that come to mind for me are:

SitePoint
ScriptLance
Talkfreelance - Number of people is not as large here, but talent is good

I've never looked for somebody to fill a similar position before, of course, so don't take those suggestions as the best or right way to go...but that's what came to mind for me.

I work for a consulting firm and there is a graphic design group we do a lot of work with, one of my consulting buddies is good friends with one of the head guys. I can see if I can get their name and pass it on if you like. I'm not 100% sure how deep their knowledge goes, I'll check on that as well if you like. I know they turned around an entire site design for us in under 3 days.
