Do people really use directories?

I was just over at another site and there was a discussion about these link farm directories we see around. I do not understand why I would want to go to or use a directory of links when I could just Google. I've never ever had the desire to use a directory and so I am wondering if they are basically cheap link scheme games as they appear to me, or if normal people actually use them in respectable numbers?

They are nice to submit to for backlinks, given, the directory is moderated and the submissions aren't junk, however, I've never found myself searching through one for information. Perhaps it's just me, but I think those new to the web are more likely to search through directories until they really know search engines. That's just my view on things.

Directories that are good and have good PR will get your site indexed quicker. I think that's the main purpose of them IMO. I don't think anyone expects you to search through them to find information. | ||||

They hope if they submit to enough directories it will raise the link higher on the page when that subject is searched for.
