Larry is probably sitting behind the scenes trying to prove how easy it is to fool the Alexa rankings. haha... Actually since I don't know that much about how those rankings are obtained, I'm not sure why or how it would jump so much in so little time. I certainly wouldn't be complaining though.

Remember Alexa always shows up as spyware. It has never given me any problems, but if you have a spyware program running it will always say it's spyware.

When you have the Alexa toolbar and you first create a site visit your site and click on the info box. In that box you can have your site included in Alexa. Remember Alexa is also a search engine and they do spider your site. Then just visit your site everyday or various times a day with Alexa running and you are guaranteed under a 100,000 rating with Alexa. I've gotten as low as 29,000 by just visiting my site everyday. I'm not guaranteeing 29,000 on your own, I'm sure someone was helping me somewhere but you can easily get a 60,000-70,000 ranking by visiting every day yourself.

On another note I'm using FireFox more often so my Alexa isn't what it use to be. Someone has to create a real Alexa toolbar for FireFox. If you want to create a working toolbar for FireFox there's some information here http://pages.alexa.com/exec/faqsidos...html?index=127 and if you make one let me know. I'm dying for IE7 to come out (a stable version) and if it's as fast as FireFox on page loads, I'm going to keep using IE exclusively since they implemented tabbed browsing.

Interesting, david...About the numbers you gave. I knew that the ranks could be influenced quite easily by visiting often with a toolbar installed - but one person can get a site into the top 100,000 and even 50,000? Are you sure those ranks were not influenced by anything else? It just seems to me like it would take more than one frequent toolbar visitor to get a site ranked in the top 50,000-100,000

I don't know that much. I will give you my honest opinion though. I don't think the A9 toolbar helps and if it does, it does not help anywhere near as much as the actual Alexa toolbar.

It could have been influenced by other outside sources, but this happened to me on several sites I owned. I came to my conclusion by looking at about four of my sites that had a 60-70,000 ranking. The sites weren't forums but were sites that I owned that I frequented for basic updates and just to look at since I had the toolbar installed. I'm talking about low traffic sites.

Try this, set up a site (could just be a basic page), don't tell anyone about it or promote it and visit it four or five times a day with the Alexa toolbar installed using IE, I'm willing to bet, you will get amazing results within a week of using the toolbar and visiting your own site. You'll see it going up and up every week. You have to faithfully visit your site everday though.

There is more information on how Alexa works and calculates their data located here http://pages.alexa.com/prod_serv/tra...earn_more.html

As far as I can tell they don't count the uniques per IP per day either, every visit is counted with the toolbar installed.

Here's an example of several Alexa rating that went down or were completely lost http://www.namepros.com/developed-si...eresellers.com freeresellers.com . If you notice all the sites that were posted for sale (they were all mine, that was my post), they lost a lot of Alexa after I sold them. If you have the Alexa toolbar installed click on the number that displays the ranking or with the A9 toolbar click on Site Info and click on one of the tabs that come down. Once you're at the Alexa website for the particular domain click on Traffic Detail it's located on the left hand side.

I'll break it down by site:

freeresellers.com I still visit it and still admin there but I'm using FireFox more often now, if you notice the traffic rank has gone down 7,375 in the last three months.

marketandpromote.com had an Alexa rank before I sold it, but it no longer has Alexa.

pop.sc also had Alexa but doesn't anymore either.

classactionlawsuits.biz went down 1,866,479 in three months.
