No, not really. Everyone who accepts credit cards for payment, are called merchants. Merchants PAY a small percentage (and/or a small fee) [like paypal] for the privilege of offering pay-with-CC.
For easy theory & math, assume that for every $40 USD the merchant pays the CC's
30 cents, plus 1.5%. That's
90 cents. So, you got $40 worth of fuel, and they got $39.10.
this is not their profit! Their profit is
probably 5% off the top, so say $2. So really,
instead of getting $2 from you, they get $1.10.
So, if they offer gasoline for 5 cents off per gallon, provided you use CASH, then in ten gallons (@ $4 a gallon) YOU save 50 cents, while THEY make 40 cents more than if you had used your Credit/Debit card.
ALL FIGURES ARE NOT EXACT, BUT DARN CLOSE.
So, to put it another way... If their mark-up is 5%, and they pay 1.5% for accepting CC, their profit
isn't 5% after all. (It's 3.5%)
One way for them to increase the 3.5% to 4% is to offer a discount for NOT having to pay their merchant fees on the transaction.
