Unhappy Something to Ponder......

With reference to the latest bombing in Bali last weekend, are we people of the world growing immune to such tragedy? It seems that the effects of such a tragedy have numb the senses of the people in general like it's just another one of those things. While what we could do is just to say a silent prayers in our heart to the victims and their families, have it come to the point that such incidents is taken like a pinch of salt?

I know that there are various outlets to air our views on such issues but since I'm feel a sense of cosiness here, I certainly would like hear the views of the people in BB.

I think we have. It is like a lot of things in this world...we, as a world body, have become way too desensitized and tolerant of too much depravity...terrorism is just another form of depravity IMO. Until the common peoples of the world stand up and take action, it will just get worse. Instead, we say "that happened somewhere else to someone else and won't happen to me, so why should I care".

It's truly sad that such acts are now being seen as a common sight or to put it bluntly, a daily affair.

I have always read with interest of such happenings around the world and at times, I kept thinking to myself. How would I feel if I know that I'm going to be the next in line.

I've got to be honest. If it doesn't pertain to Israel or Jews, I tend to ignore it. Strange, since I'm an atheist. But what can I say? I still feel some loyalty. And since we're in crisis mode, I tend shrug off things like this.

I'd personally change the above to 'some say' as i for one do not bury my head in the sand where terrorism is concerned, and most other world issues too.

I don't think i could ever 'get used' to the terrible things that happen to fellow human beings be it via terrorism, war, poverty, abuse, deprivation, racism, nature etc

I am a firm Blair supporter and backed his decision to join the war on terrorism 100% and will continue to do so.

Unfortunatly i believe terrorists have got the upper hand at the moment because terror is instilled into everyone in some way shape or form. It's dividing communities, countries and world leaders and imo alot more needs to be done to combat it.

I agree Shell, and thats really what I meant. "most, but not all". I support the effort as well...what other choice do we have as these people will not stop unless stopped. On a side note, I don't know how often it is expressed to the British people from the average American, but we are extermely grateful for the support we have from the British...we can't do it alone and wouldn't be nearly as far along as we are without it!

Its the same as most tradegys though. Murders, kidnappings, natural disasters and terrorists.

Its become an everyday part of life now, you can read in the paper of about 10 different murders each day.

Yes its a terrible thing to happen, and i always do a silent prayer when something happens like these, but thats all we can do.

The only time we would feel so strongly about this is when it hits closer to home, for instant the bombing in london this year.

It is not just terrorists that have got the upper hand Shell... and I don't know what it is like in the USA smacklan, but it is most certainly that darned stupid 'Political Correctness' that seems to have got the better of common sense around these parts.

Consider this... (and I mean no offence to anyone here OK...)

My wife owns, runs and manages two pre-school playgroups here in Wales (and I have to differentiate here between Wales and the rest of the UK as the rules are different). She is working very hard, in difficult times, when many playgroups are closing down unable to comply with the rules, policies and guidelines of managing a Childcare business under the Welsh Assembly. Jen is doing really well, and has earned a great deal of respect with the powers that be.

Anyway - let me cut to the chase... how on earth can it possibly be right to have a rule that says... she has to have a Sari in the dressing up corner to cater for ethic minorities, but she does not have to have a traditional Welsh costume in the dressing up corner. Now, you tell me that is not political correctness gone berserk...!!!!

There's more where that came from too if you want it.

Yes, John, PCness is a disease in the States as well. If you ask me, (no offense to the libs in the audience), but it is a liberal tactic meant to undermine society. It is born out of fear of offending a voter or potential voter. It is nuts. I think what happened in London this summer is a prime example of how devastating PCness can be...let em in, don't force them to ascimilate to your society, pay their everyway with public assistance and don't deport them if they act up...a recipe for disaster.

Don't even get me started on political correctedness lol

In relation to what a couple of you said about terrorism, etc. When I was living near Heathrow (up to last November) the way feelings were running there was not good towards immigrants and suchlike. Now I need to be careful how I phrase this as I am not in any way racist, but when you live in an area in England where the English person is in the minority and every day you're driving through the streets seeing Somali immigrants selling their 12 year old daughters to some old pervert in the car as he goes past it starts to breed contempt - so a lot of the feeling of "oh well, it's happened out there, tough shit" is coming from that feeling, I think.

On a personal level, it's not that I don't care about what's happening in the rest of the world, but more a case of I have my own family to worry about and what will directly affect them will concern me first and foremost. I do spare a thought for those people who are suffering at the hands of terrorism elsewhere, but as there is very little I can actually do about it I have to keep my main focus on the things I CAN deal with.

That make sense? I'm full of flu right now, so I'm probably not being very clear.
