Got a PC Problem

I was given an older computer which is a Gateway 95 model, it's still in good shape and I was wanting to turn it into a sort of word processor for my storys.

However somebody upgraded the software package on it to a Windows 98 and they didn't give me the software number when I got it, so I called asking for the number because the program won't let me in without it and they said that it had been lost.

Is there any hack out there who would be willing to walk me through manually unlocking the program if that's possible?
'Cause I have no idea how to do it.

well, not sure about it since windows 98 lost official suport from MS if they consider it abandonware... and you can find it in sites that distribute that kind of sw... might want to check that because MS is pretty zelaous of his copyrights and might still be vigent, even when they not support it.

Look on the box...there may be a sticker with a hologram that gives you the MS license number. That's my answer, now my suggestion:

Forget MS and their licenses...Put Linux on this box. A free box should have a free OS... If you're new to Linux download Mandrake (good for newbies) otherwise download CentOS or somthing similar. Then get OpenOffice and you will have a great free word processor...

I checked the box first for a sticker because there is always supposed to be one but apparently it was removed by my friend who is a technical about these things as a turtle.

I have the linux program and I was going to load it when I found Windows wouldn't let me in, so I'm back at where I started, unless I can find a way to drop windows without having to insert the code for the 98 program.

Can you be a little more clear? Sounds to me like you are saying you cant install Linux because of Windows? If so, nothing can be further from the truth. Just download and make Linux CD's and boot from them.

No what I'm saying is that I didn't know what it would do if I did load Linux without booting Windows first, If I load Linux on it won't Windows still be there in the background?
Or does Linux get rid of it for good?
