Is it really that good? I ask because the username I typically use, gprime, is already taken, thus making me less inclined to post there. But I here mentioned quite often. So I'd like to here what makes it great enough (beyond the custom forum software) for somebody whose usual username is unavailabe to make it worth posting.

Well, it depends in what you expect to find, a general design principle is that when you cannot find inspiration, you steal it , I go there usually to check other people's work and to find inspiration for stuff that I could use in my own work. I don't "rip", as Deserthawk once put it, that is I dont steal other people work to pass it as my own, but I surely can take inspiration from other when my own is dry.

imo it's best place to show your works and recieve feedback one them, and it's best resources site for designers.
if your username is used, you can use something like +gprime+, or maybe someone how using your user name isn't active and you can ask him to give it to you.

I have an account there and it's active almost every day, in my opinion it's the best place for artists to get together and talk shop on anything you do for a hobbie, digital art, painting, graphite sketches, arts and crafts, photography ect.

Don't worry about the username, like DesrtHawk said, if it's inactive they will probably give it to you if you ask them nicely.

One thing is for certain I wouldn't trade DA for Elftown, which I was a member of for a long time but reacently it has just gone so far downhill that it may never come back to life again, I think the people who own it just gave up on their members and left.

As to the inactive thing, I asked the support desk, and they said only if the person had a publically displayed email, which they don't, could I contact them and request the password.

I wouldn't suggest it, they would probably take it that you were trying to hack into that persons account instead of just wanting the username.

You may have to use an entra symbol in the name then, which is never fun but atleast you can still use the name.
