High speed desktop Gnome released

A new version of the Gnome Desktop for Linux and Unix operating systems is set to be released next month, with faster speeds and new features aimed at corporate IT managers.

Gnome 2.14 will offer “noticeable speed-ups throughout the desktop”, according to information posted to Gnome’s blog by developer Davyd Madeley.

The speed of font rendering has been increased, while a new memory allocator, GSlice, will boost the software’s general performance.

New tools for IT managers include Pessulus, a lockdown editor that allows administrators to disable particular desktop functions.

The Sabayon tool allows managers to create profiles for groups of users, with default and mandatory settings for these groups.

“Administrators can quickly edit and deploy profiles by changing settings inside a live, nested Gnome session,” Madeley said.

Gnome 2.14 also includes new searching systems in its Yelp help application and the Nautilus file manager.
