Young Developer Forums

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some feedback on a forum of mine.

www.YoungDevForums.com

I just started them yesterday so there isn't much to view. I'm mainly looking for some suggestions on where to go with the site. I kept the # of forums to a minimum but in the future I plan on adding a couple more forums(stuff like an SEO forum, etc.) and a design section of the site and a coding section.

Another thing you may want to note is that I have IP.Blog and IP.Gallery installed as well so ideas for how to implement those well into the site would be appreciated.

(I'm thinking about getting a new skin but I will probably wait as the default isn't half bad.)

I'd just like to say, if your having a forum for web development, you really need a different skin from default. It sends mixed messages otherwise.

Do you think it's that important? IMO the default skin for IPB is nice looking and better than a lot of the other skins available for it. Plus, most forums use vBulletin so it's already a bit different than the majority of forums.

Of course I eventually plan on using a different skin but for now I think it should be ok, right?

Get your forum up and running first, definitely. Lock your content down. However, think about your topic - Development. You should develop your forum appearance from it's default state. Doing that will really help you to attract more members, as it reflects your development abilities, and gives a great impressions. You can always find someone to help you make a custom skin if you don't like anything out there.

Initial Impression:
Its the default IPB skin so the skin is okay ill get more in to that latter, the amount of forums is good and everything seems pretty nice

Organization and Feel:
Like i said above the amount of forums you have is good not to many just enough

Skins and Modifications:
I think you should get a new skin to make it different and stand out more you should design it because your a good designer

the only mods i see are the gallery and blog. I think you should add a welcome message saying welcome to youngdevforums blah join our site... and so on

Also! you should get a favicon because they are cool

Guidelines and Staff:
Your guidelines are under construction so you should fix those as soon as you can

as for staff its fine that your the only one because its a new forum the only benefit of other staff members would be they would help populate the forum but that will guy over there is helping out pretty nicely

Recommended Changes:

  • Get a skin
  • Get a favicon
  • Finish your rules
  • Add a welcome message
I think thats it good luck with your forum and i like it thats why i post there

Yes, definitely get a new skin. Sure, using the default skin is not always a bad thing, but when you have a forum dedicated to web development, it's always a good idea to use a skin other than the default; more specifically, a custom skin (something that will stand out).

You are in a very busy industry...with competitors like digital point, v7 and sitepoint, you should send some time on those forums and see what they do well. It is important that if you are not first in a market that you can provide something that the others don't to make your product unique and desirable.
