I have a default and a testing theme, where I implement any changes I wish to make so I can test them out. What I did was I exported the default theme. I imported it and named it "Testing". This created a new theme and template set. Any changes to buttons and icons should be uploaded under a different folder or renamed. (In other words, do not overwrite them.) You can then change the paths of the images in the theme and/or template.
