Seems everyone is with php these days. Yabb is written in perl and that may be the reason!

I used it 4 years ago. Then I realised I don't have some of the features I need so I moved to phpBB. I know Yabb has been updated and re-worked, but I don't use it and don't intend doing so.

CrystalShards will become famous soon enough

I know a board that uses it, and I don't particularly like the software. VB will always be my favorite.

I know that SMF was originally a PHP port of YaBB - I just tend to pick PHP scripts, I guess that's because I know (a bit) of PHP to MOD and such

I tested it once, but then never used it as it was unprofessional and didn't use a MySQL database. I just use Pre-Modded phpBB2

YaBB was very popular upto a few years ago. YaBB SE was initially the PHP port of YaBB. But since YSE got a bad name inherited from YaBB's security problems, the change to SMF was made, including a whole new code base.

YaBB still exists and it is at major version 2 now. Afaik, it has become the standard option for bulletin boards in cPanel (this used to be phpBB before).
