Question Keeping spam/harvest bots away

Hi,

From looking at the IPs of the guests on my forum, most of them are blacklisted, so I'm guessing that they are spam bots. They arn't doing anything bad aside from harvesting e-mail addresses (and spamming my e-mail inbox ), but I;'m interested in blocking them. Any good way to do that?

I'm running MyBB 1.2.2

It sounds to me like you need to figure out how to keep them from seeing email addresses instead of keeping them out all together. I wouldn't recommend flat-out banning guest IP's because you believe they are spambots or are blacklisted. There's nothing wrong with a spambot browsing your forums until they actually do something...most of the time the problem is registering/spamming, and that is stopped by locking down registration...in your case, you need to keep them from seeing the email addresses.

You could turn off 'Allow my members to send me e-mails' in your User CP and that will completely remove your e-mail from view in the forums.

But will this keep the bots from harvesting the emails? I don't think it does. I think you need a Robot.txt file added to your HTTP access on the root server telling bots when they arrive that there is nothing there for them to see. Do a Google search on Robot.txt and see what you can find.

If the bots already found and recorded your e-mail address then no. But it will prevent future bots from 'picking it up'.

Either way, not all robots (spam bots, etc) will follow a robot.txt.
