Joomla is nice, but it's a bit bloated (feature-wise), and it's ACP is a bit confusing. Obviously, it has more features + options than the default IPB Portal, but it really depends on what you are looking for. Have you taken a look at TinyPortal? Drupal?

I used it on my older site until about a month ago. The ACP is a bit overbearing to begin with and could be alot simpler. It's great if you use most of what is available and it can be edited to work for just about anything, but it was just too much for me to worry about and not quite what I was looking for.

It is definitely a powerful tool if you use it correctly.

It is a little work to set up, took me a couple days to learn the basics but once you get do it gets a lot easier. I like the functionalities that it has and it is well supported with addons I built http://simplegfx.net with it to and it pretty much runs itself now.

It took me about a week to get it all figured out. I tried Xoops first but it seemed Joomla had allot more supported modules and components. I am throughly enjoying playing around with it now.. There are several sites that have nice components and templates for very little of no fee at all.

I think Joomla is a quite competent CMS, I've been looking at v1.5 beta and it's a lot better again

1.5 is still in beta - I don't know about template compatibility. I guess you'd have to download the beta and see if your template works. I think they've changed the PHP templating system
