Names

Are members allowed to use people's first name or first and last name on forums if the person they're talking about isn't on the forum or even if they are?

Thank you very much.

If people choose to divulge their real name on site, the members can use it if they want. No-one is to be purposely "outed" though if it's against the persons will. I use my real name on the forums i run as my username

Thats something that would be on a case by case basis. If a user allows for their name to be displayed then thats their choice and allows it to be used.

I'm referred to by my first name all the time on nearly every forum I go to.

Depends.

I'm fine with it, as long as the person being referred to isn't objecting to his real name's usage.

I pretty much agree with whats been said, its a users choice whether they want to disclose their name or not. If another user calls a user by their name against their wishes and they want it removed I would remove it for them. I personally use my first name as my username on my forums.

I'm of the belief that if you don't know my name you don't need to. I don't use my real name on ANY site so if you're calling me by my name you're trying to prove something. I used to be on a board with a woman who'd call people by their real names just to prove how much she knew about them. Since then it creeps me out. I'd rather real FIRST names were not used unless that member has expressly given permission to use it... and last names never not ever, EVER.

I even hate showing ID at the grocery store or something, and having the clerk say 'thanks [insert first name]!] AGH! HATE THAT. Who said you could use my name?

Well lots of our members are really close so we all know each other's names. I usually will call people by their first names in the shoutbox or in social threads, but in official announcements or places I need to address people who don't know us all so well I use their usernames. I have people's names display in their postbit. Most people call me Michael or Mick.
