Auto join or admin approval on registration

i was wondering on what your view point is on ppl joining your site
do they join auto or do you need to approve them
the reason i am asking is because i cant decide on which to choose
make the ppl who join be able to post that moment or make it so the admin needs to approve the user

the reason is cuz sometimes i can get spammers

I don't have admin approval, or email verification for that matter, on on my site. I was to make it as easy as possible for people to register.

but i worry bout the possible spammers
maybe the possible good users out way the risk of possible bad ones?

I'd rather not lose potential members and allow a spammer through because I can easily ban them. I think spam prevention is good but not if it also hinders real potential members.

I have CAPTCHA & NoSpam! protection, that is all. I used to use admin approval for a period of two weeks whilst a rather persistant banned user kept attempting to return for some...fun. But after he bogged off we went back to our normal CAPTCHA & NoSpam!
(If you're not sure what NoSpam! is, it's a rather nice mod to accompany, or replace CAPTCHA on vBulletin.)

i am using joomla
and the COPPA has almost taken off the auto spam bots thingies *whatever u call them* to stop

but i may not have noticed if a spammer had joined

I don't think there are many reasons to be so restrictive or controlling. The only reason we do it is because we are a private support forum and there are people we want to keep out.

I'd be more sorry if I lost a potential member than if a spammer posted on my forum. You can delete the spammer's posts but you can't get that lost user back.
