Are portals important?

When I upgrade to Vb3.5.4, I was mulling over about adding a portal page or not. Some sites have them some don’t. It seems most of the sites that have them either don’t use them properly, meaning keeping them updated, or their links go directly into there forums therefore bypassing the portal.

So what’s your opinion?

I don't know what we're going to do with ours here at AF, but we'll be getting rid of our current front page shortly when we release the new skin...we probably won't be going with something as heavy as Drupal, that we are currently using, but will instead go simple. Just put up a simple page that will tell you where to go for what, and possibly have the latest news/articles there.

I dont know - I say that if you are going to do it, make sure you have good reason and keep maintenance in mind. A portal/front page which is not maintained is no good because it's often the first page your visitors get...one of the reasons we're going to get rid of ours, because I'll honestly say that it's not very attractive

Well IMO they can be great or awful. Mine is turning out ok. I am putting news on the portal and it is getting me great traffic. I think if you can keep it filled up and interesting it can be great. Also members have a better chance of checking that then "Site News" or "Announcements" so they might find out about a contest or something new sooner.

As long as your make your portal not look like a portal. It adds some content to the page. I decided after 2+ years to add content to my website and it's turning out good. I've got a mini portal on the front page with recent news in the adult industry.

Go with vBDrupal and customize it to your site, don't use vBCMPS. With Drupal, if you decide to expand it's there for you.

No they are not much important. A VBulletin / IPB forum looks much better without portals.

Personally i don't like portals. I feel they are just something that gets in the way.

But i guess for some people it could be useful. Makes it more like a news website.
