Staff Etiquette: What's Good and What's Bad


There are many questions about how a staff member should act once they become staff. In this article, I will attempt to outline good and bad things a staff member engages in.

Good
  • Knows the rules
  • Knows what to do (i.e. how to use the moderator control panel, etc.)
  • Follows the rules fairly for all members, including themselves and other staff members (in other words, is consistent)
  • Shows maturity, even when things don’t go their way
  • Posts about problems with staff members in the staff forum
  • Keeps whatever is said in the staff room in the staff room, unless otherwise instructed to do so.
  • Keeps everyone level-headed
  • Shows leadership
  • Discusses questionable decisions made by fellow staff members with those staff members
  • Actively participates in staff discussion and in the community
  • Starts new topics regularly
  • Has a friendly and positive attitude
  • Shows an effort to make relevant posts with good spelling and grammar
  • Takes criticism with a good attitude and uses relevant and accurate criticism to improve their work
  • Takes the time to help new and old members when they have questions
  • Is reliable
  • Stops harassment before it can begin or cause too much damage
  • Is easily found
  • Will admit when they are wrong, will agree to disagree (i.e. compromises), etc.

Bad
  • Does not know the rules
  • Makes no effort to follow the rules
  • Does not know how to use important items such as the warning panel
  • Makes exceptions to the rules
  • Tells anyone and everyone what is talked about in the staff room
  • Openly talks about board problems
  • Talks bad about the forum or other members
  • Talks back to upper staff
  • Makes rash decisions without asking other staff members’ opinions
  • Talks back to other mods/administrators
  • Participates or starts flame wars, attacks members for their opinions or questions
  • Is passive-aggressive or just plain aggressive
  • Overrules other staff members’ decisions without a good reason
  • Shows up occasionally or rarely
  • Never participates in staff discussion or offers useless posts, flames ideas, etc.
  • Spams
  • Is biased/shows favoritism
  • Bullies or threatens members or other coworkers
  • Takes criticism heavily, if they take it at all
  • Holds grudges
  • Tries to be the center of attention all the time, creates drama
  • Is impersonal or rude to members, new or old
  • Is constantly off-topic
  • Harasses members and fellow staff
  • Is never there when you need them
  • Always has to have the last word

If you know a staff member who conducts mostly good behavior, give them a pat on the back. If a staff member does most of the bad behaviors, perhaps you should consider demoting them. Keep in mind most of these behaviors and attitudes are those of good members, not just staff. When promoting staff, look at how good of a member they were before you look at how competent they are. Granted, someone may be good for a job, but they might also be a jerk. This will turn off many of your members and might even lose you activity. Likewise, someone may be really nice, but they need to know what they are doing. Make sure your staff members have both.
