How do alexa really work ?

I have a site that has higher volume of traffic htan my friends blogm but he has a higher alexa rank (lower number). I thought alexa was suposed to be a traffic bases rank thing.

any help would do.

Alexa only gathers data from people who use their toolbar, which explains why it is not completely accurate, only a general idea.

Yep Alexa is terrible. The figures just aren't believable at all. I cringe when people quote Alexa stats in domain sales.... It's a nice idea, just not enough people use their toolbar, and it's so easy to actively affect your sites position...

No, alexa actually only records people who use their toolbar, or their stats. One excellent alternative to their toolbar, especially if you use firefox is sparky. I find it an incredibly good addon for Firefox myself, and I've never had an issue running it with norton.
