3 Month Thoughts on PF

Ryan/Larry;
After 3 months of participation in the new PF system I wanted to give you some feedback. I would say I am in the top 1-5 posters who participate on a daily basis.

My feedback is this. It is just way to easy to fall down the list. Not only from the top spot, but from the first page completely. I'll give you an example. I have made about 100 posts in a 12 hour period on other PF sites and been on the top of the list. The next closest site is at 10 or lower and literally every other PF site is negative or close to it from the volume of posting I have done. But if my site receives just 10-15 posts it falls completely off the first page. In addition the site falls way below other sites who have not made any posts at all on my site.

This seems to me to be an issue, or one that should be addressed. I am not saying that you should make it so the top site never falls, BUT
- it should be easier to stay towards the top of the list without falling 20 or more spots.
- Also, people who are not participating in the same volume as others should not see their placement go up when they are not posting at all. that makes no sense IMO. They are almost rewarded for not posting...

The system is weighted so heavily towards the sites trying to move up, that the there is no advantage for making a lot of posts.

I am not saying the system does not work, or is bad, or anything like that. I like the PF system and being part of it. I just wanted to offer some real feedback about how it works.

I can tell you honestly that a few people I referred to be part of PF have decided to quit or not participate because they worked hard to get to the top of the list (or on the first page), only to receive a few posts, FAR LESS then they made on other sites - and then fell way down the list. I tried to explain to them to make consistent posts each day and all the stuff we discussed a few months ago, but even when they did that - they still fell down the list with a far disproportionate amount of posts being received on their site in comparison to the amount they made on others to move to the top portion of the list.

Thanks!

Don't make 100 posts in 12 hours. Don't flood the system. I don't know how many times we've told you that a few posts at a time will keep you up there much better than a bunch of posts made sporadically will.

Right, and all else equal, 10-15 posts will get you right back up there

You make it sound like you work for hours to get to #1 and then lose it in minutes. Don't work for hours - you don't need to. Make a handful of posts at the #1 forum, and you'll move up. It is just as easy to rise as it is to fall.

I don't understand the significance here...Just because somebody has not posted on your forums does not mean that they should be below you. You're not the only forum listed in PF

This is good. We don't want people flooding the system. We want people spreading posts out - and PF is perfectly designed to do just this.

To summarize - Where you post and when you post makes a huge difference. If you work for hours to get to #1, then you are doing something wrong. That's just not how the system is set up. Odds are, you're busy posting at forums that are not near the top of the list...Regardless of how much you like those forums, we've got to reward the people at the top by giving them more posts

That said, rankings might be too volatile - Something inside of me is telling me that they are, and I am still willing to tweak the formula if need be. Right now, though, I think we're pretty close to a good formula.

90% of your concerns are, I'm sure, you just not understanding how the system is designed.

Ryan - I 100% understand the system. I have posted hundreds of times a day, and only a few a day on the top ranked sites. I have done this over consistent weeks to just see what would happen. Trust me Ryan, I understand how the moving works, up and down.

Finally, thank you for considering that the rankings might be too volatile, which was the point of my original post. Please remember Ryan, this is feedback, and you as the manager/owner of the system should be open to it. Thank you for you time.

But in your original post, you made it very clear that you didn't understand how it was so hard to get to the top yet so easy to fall...Now you say that you do understand this.

Most of my second post was simply explaining that it is just as easy to rise as it is to fall. There is no reason that you should be working for hours to maintain the top spot.

No i understand it completely, my feedback was that IMO it should be adjusted, tweaked, or as you said the rankings made less volatile.

I never said the system sucked, or should be shut down, or anything like that. I said I liked being part of it and that is still true. The problem Ryan is that you take every post, no matter how worded or phrased or whatever tone, as a personal attack, even when it is completely intended as just discussion and feedback...

I took that as a personal attack? Hmm, news to me

What I did was explain the system to you (one of many times I have done this). You dont understand the system completely, as evidenced multiple times in your posts...You think that making 100 posts in 12 hours should keep you at the top. I'm sorry, because it should not - that's not how we intended for this to work.

You also think, for some odd reason, that if somebody doesn't post in your forums, they should not be ranked above you. I don't understand the reasoning behind that one.

All that I've done is explain how and why these things work the way you do, and by doing so, you immediately assume that I'm not welcoming feedback...which again, is not the case.

Again Ryan, let me state this again. I understand everything you have said over and over. Like I said, I have done it BOTH ways, with lots of posts every day AND just consistent posts on the top sites on others. I did it both ways, over multiple weeks time, just to see how it effected the movement of my site.

Even after doing that and testing it both ways, I still felt the need to provide you with feedback. I have done that. Again - thanks.
